Abandoned McDonald’s kept as an ’80s time capsule
On July 8, 2021, TikTok user @triangleofmass posted a new urban exploration video taped inside an abandoned McDonald’s restaurant. From our past correspondence with McDonald’s corporate contacts, some of the furniture inside the restaurant dates back to the mid-1980s. However, it may have appeared to close later around 2007.
Not Taco Bell
The restaurant furnishings made it look like a time capsule from the 1980s.
A number of TikTok reviewers have claimed that it looked like the abandoned restaurant could have been a Taco Bell before it became a McDonald’s. The first comment was, “Part one was definitely a taco bell.” It was because of the faded pink and blue color scheme on the tables and chairs, as well as the tiling under the counter.
However, some of our own past reporting on a McDonald’s restaurant in Oregon confirmed that the fast food chain used this same color scheme in the mid-1980s. The furniture matched the McDonald’s color scheme. of the time and had nothing to do with Taco Bell.
According to the video, the McDonald’s restaurant may have been closed and abandoned in 2007. Its location has not been disclosed by the creator of the video, @triangleofmass, who is likely to keep its whereabouts anonymous and secret.
In the short preview posted on TikTok, it emerged that much of the restaurant’s furniture and equipment had been left behind. This was probably because much of it was dated and would not have been of much use to other McDonald’s locations.
Items left in the abandoned McDonald’s included: tables, chairs, computer screens, food preparation and warming equipment, soft drink dispensers, food containers and a hot chocolate machine. We also spotted a box for Chicken McNuggets, food signage, and various bins.
The last photo even showed a special McDonald’s bag for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. “I remember when bags looked like this,” said a comment with hundreds of likes. “Omg this bag is so nostalgic, way of memory,” remarked another commenter.
