Associate Dean, Chemical and Environmental Engineering job with RMIT UNIVERSITY

  • Play a central role in providing senior leadership for the academic and research performance of the School and contribute to the planning and growth of the University workforce strategy
  • Of particular relevance is to the leadership and management of the discipline of chemical and environmental engineering
  • The 3-year associate dean position is supported by a permanent professor position (level E)
  • This role reports to the Dean – School of Engineering with 15-25 direct reports
  • Compensation for academic level E ($ 190,891) + 17% retirement + 10% loading for the appointment of Associate Dean

About the role

You will be responsible for:

  • Play a critical role in the School’s leadership team, lead and manage the Chemical and Environmental Engineering staff, and work collaboratively with the Dean to enable the School and STEM College to take the next step of the transformation ;
  • Provide academic and strategic leadership and foster a culture of progression to enable the implementation of the College’s research and learning and teaching strategies;
  • Lead the advancement of teaching in the discipline, including initiating curriculum improvements, improving academic standards, as well as actively contributing to research by publishing high impact publications and securing competitive research grants ;
  • To provide, in collaboration with other members of the discipline, the best student experience by adopting interactive and digital student-centered learning experiences and by identifying and implementing innovative learning and teaching initiatives ;
  • Actively connect with industry, commerce and government for research and educational initiatives with external national and global partners;
  • Maintain and develop relationships with relevant departments of the university and other institutions;
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of processes within the disciplines of the School of Engineering and act as a credible role model to positively influence the culture of the School;
  • Make a significant contribution to governance and collegial life inside and outside the University, constantly demonstrating the values ​​of RMIT.

About you:

  • Strong experience and proven skills in academic leadership and management with the ability and ability to achieve strategic goals;
  • Proven experience in financial management, governance and quality systems within a university;
  • Solid experience in publishing high quality journal articles in disciplinary research areas such as chemical engineering and / or environmental engineering at national and international levels;
  • Extensive experience in innovative teaching in a discipline relevant to this school, supported by a deep understanding of contemporary learning and teaching theory;
  • Knowledge and in-depth understanding of relevant industry and training priorities;
  • Experience in developing and leading successful international collaborations;
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills with the ability to communicate, establish and maintain internal and external relationships;
  • Ability to foster a culture of positive change and think strategically about organizational goals and priorities;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage scholarship programs and lead program reviews and the ability to maintain and develop research groups and centers by attracting external funding.
  • Extensive experience in attracting and supervising graduate research candidates in order to maximize research performance;



  • Higher education degrees (including doctorate) in relevant disciplines
  • Appointment to this post is subject to successful completion of a child labor test.
