Meilyn Recker, a sophomore student at Fruita Monument High School, was selected to enter the national competition by the YEA investor panel on March 17, the House said in a press release. She will compete in the semi-final virtual competition, tentatively scheduled for June 12, where she could win up to $ 30,000 in scholarships and $ 5,000 in cash prizes. Recker also received $ 1,860 in seed funding from local YEA sponsors.
Eight other YEA students have also received funding from investors, but the program is not over. Students will use investor money to start their businesses and non-profit organizations. They will present their ideas to the public during the YEAH! Tradeshow at May 15 at Mesa Shopping Center, at 2424 US Highway 6 & 50.
Recker’s winning idea is Rezcue, a nonprofit organization that rescues puppies living on Native American reservations. She has been volunteering with dogs since she was 8, according to the press release, and was recently fortunate enough to raise a litter of puppies.
