In order to know the status of your return, you will need to provide your:
- Social security number or identification number
- Exact refund amount

According to the Internal Revenue Service, you can use the “where is my refundto check the status of a refund owed to you for the current tax year, as well as the previous two years.
In order to track your refund, you will need to provide:
- Your social security number
- Your filing status
- The refund amount
According to the IRS, you must enter the exact dollar refund amount shown on your tax return.
“Providing the exact total dollar amount is critical to receiving the correct answer,” the agency said.
After entering your information, the tool will offer you one of three statuses:
- Return received.
- Refund approved.
- Refund sent.
The tool is updated once a day, according to the IRS, and gives taxpayers an expected refund issue date upon approval.
The service can provide status details 24 hours after a return is filed electronically.
If more than 21 days have passed since a tax return was filed electronically or more than six weeks since a return was sent, taxpayers can call a tax help hotline to speak to a representative.
If the IRS needs more information to process the return, you will be contacted by mail.

As a result, the deadline for filing tax returns has been extended to April 18.
What if I asked for an extension?
If you filed for a tax extension (the deadline for doing so was April 18), your taxes are now not due until October 17. However, the IRS recommends filing earlier than this deadline.
“We encourage those who are waiting for a refund, but have requested an extension, to file their case as soon as they are ready. We process returns on a first-come basis, so the sooner the better,” the official said. IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig.
“There really is no reason to wait until October 17 if registrants have the relevant information to file now.”
