It’s time for the chimney inspection before winter
WAUSAU, Wisconsin (WSAW) – Now is the time for the people of central Wisconsin to start using their chimneys again.
After a dormant season, professional chimney sweeps recommend that homeowners have their chimneys inspected for damage and clean up creosote buildup to prevent chimney fires this winter.
Homeowners can also take preventative measures to minimize this build-up, according to a Stevens Point chimney sweep.
“Hardwood is what you want to burn, say oak, elm, ash, that sort of thing. You basically want to avoid burning the pine tree at all costs. Even if you’ve dried it out for years and years and years, it still sounds a bad tone that everything wants to stick to it, ”said Jim Fletcher, owner of Fletcher’s Chimney Service.
He pointed out another reason for having chimneys inspected that homeowners might not consider. Animals often enter chimneys during warmer seasons and build nests. Chimney sweeps will also eliminate these types of problems.
It is always best to anticipate and plan your inspection well in advance. Many businesses are booked weeks or months in advance.
“This is our busiest time of the year. Basically once August starts to roll around or people start thinking about their stacks, then everyone starts calling at the same time, ”Fletcher said.
