The Uttar Pradesh Highway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) will start collecting the toll tax on the Purvanchal Highway from Sunday.
UPEIDA Managing Director Awanish Awasthi said it had been decided to impose a toll charge on the Purvanchal highway from May 1. The peculiarity is that the toll rates of the Purvanchal highway have also been set similarly to the Agra-Lucknow highway. The toll company will donate Rs 222 crore annually to the UP government. The UP cabinet had recently approved a proposal to levy a toll charge on the Purvanchal highway.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this highway on November 16. Until now, drivers have enjoyed free travel on the Purvanchal highway, but now they will have to pay a toll tax at the rate of Rs 2.15 per kilometer on the Agra-Lucknow highway lines.
The length of the Purvanchal highway between Lucknow and Ghazipur is 340 km. So, Rs 731 will be charged as toll tax for the journey from Lucknow to Ghazipur.
UPEIDA has spent Rs 11,216 crores for the construction of the Purvanchal highway. This highway was developed in eight lots. Twenty-two flyovers, seven railway over bridges, seven major bridges and 114 minor bridges have been built on this highway. Apart from this, the highway has 45 vehicle underpasses, 139 small vehicle underpasses, 87 pedestrian underpasses, and 525 culverts.
